Work at the central talayot of Torre d'en Galmés reveals a previously unknown monumental staircase
This archaeological intervention has been made possible thanks to the support of the Island Council, which will increase the excavation budget to 500,000 euros
This morning, the progress of the archaeological works being carried out since July 2025 at the central talayot of the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés was presented. The work has focused on the excavation of the main structure of the talayot and the adjoining spaces located on its southern side, as well as on the progressive consolidation of the structures being uncovered.

This morning, the progress of the archaeological work being carried out since July 2025 at the central talayot of the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés was presented. The work has focused on excavating the main structure of the talayot and the adjoining spaces located on its southern side, as well as on the progressive consolidation of the structures being uncovered.
During the presentation, attended by Adolfo Vilafranca, President of the Island Council of Menorca; Joan Pons Torres, Councillor for Culture and President of the Talayotic Menorca Agency; Bàrbara Jordi, heritage technician; and Cristina Bravo, archaeologist and co-director of the excavations, the discovery of a monumental staircase providing access to the upper platform of the talayot was highlighted. This architectural element is of great significance within the context of Talayotic culture and is comparable to the staircase at the settlement of Cornia Nou, located in Maó.
During the course of the intervention, it was also determined that the restoration work is far more complex than initially expected. Specifically, the northern face of the talayot shows instability and a high risk of collapse, which has required part of the work to be reconsidered.
This increased technical complexity has led the Island Council of Menorca to raise the contract amount to 500,000 euros. The contract was initially awarded for 353,320 euros to the company Catarqueòlegs SL, and has now been modified to incorporate all the new actions. The budget increase will also make it possible to extend the excavation to the southern areas, where a stratigraphic sequence with superimposed structures more complex than originally anticipated has been documented.
These efforts reaffirm the Island Council’s commitment to Talayotic Menorca, as emphasised by President Adolfo Vilafranca: “We are committed to Talayotic Menorca and we demonstrate it through actions. That is why we allocate resources and efforts. Here at Torre d’en Galmés, we have extended the contract and more areas than initially planned will be excavated.” He added: “We work for the conservation, study and dissemination of Menorca’s heritage, which is one of the island’s greatest assets and defines us as Minorcans.”
